    To achieve the goals laid out in HSL’s 2015 strategic plan and to increase our impact on seniors and their families, Hebrew SeniorLife, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, is engaged in a $125+ million fund raising campaign. Strategic priorities for the campaign include initiatives such as Memory Health, Research, Education, Elder Abuse Prevention, and Revitalizing our Boston Campus. This campaign will help ensure HSL’s financial strength and stability while elevating our position for the future.

    The Major Gifts Officer will play a critical role in the overall success of our Major Gifts team and campaign. S/he will work closely with the Director of Development to develop and implement strategy for individual gift prospects and donors to meet short and long-term goals of the department. The primary objective of the Major Gifts Officer is to develop relationships that are built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions and values. The Major Gifts Officer will demonstrate a passion for HSL mission and programs; identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors for gifts of $50,000+; and possess the ability to be creative, flexible and think out of the box.


    • Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 100-120 prospects with donors in all categories of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
    • Build a pipeline of donors by intentionally cultivating various HSL constituency groups and through annual fund solicitations
    • Solicit and close gifts ranging from $50,000+ by developing strategic funding requests for individuals based on short, intermediate, and long-term funding goals
    • Think strategically about unique cultivation events for prospects/donors and work with the events team to help execute
    • Assume leadership for special projects that target specific constituencies or campaign priorities
    • Strive to meet individual and team metrics for personal visits and fund raising outcomes
    • Travel to our 8 housing communities located throughout the Boston area for events, prospect meetings and internal networking
    • Planned Giving experience desired but not required


    • Eagerness to embody HSL cultural beliefs and belief in HSL’s mission
    • 5-10 years of nonprofit fundraising experience and a demonstrated record of closing five figure gifts
    • Demonstrated ability to relate well to and inspire the trust and confidence of donors, their legal and financial advisors as well as the trust and confidence of colleagues
    • Demonstrate ability to synthesize information and communicate it in an accurate and compelling form, both written and spoken
    • Experience with Development information systems and databases (Raisers’ Edge strongly preferred)
    • Strong sense of responsibility for achieving personal fundraising goals while working as a member of a team
    • Capacity to manage and organize confidential information, and to exercise discretion and sound judgment
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively; synthesize information and communicate it in an accurate and compelling form, both written and spoken; and multi-task, meet deadlines, and work as a self-starter
    • Bachelor’s degree required
