  • Overview

    The Medical Assistant is an integral member of the outpatient practice team, and collaborates with other multidisciplinary members to meet the clinical needs of the patients. Under the direction of the Medical Director and the Administrative Director, the Medical Assistant is responsible for ensuring patient flow in the outpatient practice. The Medical Assistant is often the first clinical contact for patients seeking care in the outpatient clinics and as such, will demonstrate a strong commitment to the philosophy and goals of the mission of Hebrew SeniorLife. S/he will work with the team to meet all needs of the patients and will strive to make every encounter with a patient a positive and meaningful experience and opportunity, while providing safe and efficient quality of care.






    1. Maintains practice flow by greeting patients and escorting them to exam rooms. Helps ensure smooth patient flow by obtaining vital signs, prepping patients, and reviewing their health information with them in an effort to streamline each patient’s visit with the clinician..
    2. Phlebotomy and routine lab test ie- urinalysis, culture swabs, finger sticks,  INR's, ear irrigations, EKG's, nares swab. And process specimens accordingly to be sent to lab. IE centrifuge/separate/ordering and collection
    3. Performing EKG’s ordering tests for clinician such as ultrasounds/x-rays etc
    4. Able to provide would care and pressure wraps if needed.
    5. Support primary care providers during and between exams as directed.
    6. Assist clinicians with procedures or other patient care follow-up as appropriate
    7. Documents pertinent information regarding care delivered in appropriate area of electronic medical records
    8. Serve as communication and information resource for patients on the phone and in person in the office.
    9. Partner with other members of the practice team to develop and run health fairs, screening days, and other patient centered programs and events.
    10. Maintain excellent customer service with patients, families, clinicians and all co-workers.
    11. Protect patient confidentiality by promoting professional staff communication according to HIPPA standards.
    12. Serves as back up to clinical coordinator, using appropriate practice management systems to schedule appointments, update demographics, manage busy phone line and triage all incoming patient requests and requests from others – including family members
    13. Establish and maintain relationships with other departments and individuals who are important to the overall success of the outpatient clinics (Medical Records, Pharmacy, Administration)\
    14. Ensure all Department of Public Health standards are being met that are required for the successful facilitation of the medical practice (ie: regulating temperature for the refridgerator, maintaining appropriate daily logs/etc.
    15. Adhere to established policies, procedures and objectives.
    16. Complete special projects as assigned.
    17. Exemplify professionalism and exhibit values that contribute to the achievement of the mission of Hebrew SeniorLife.

    Graduate of approved medical assistant program

    • Previous experience in a fast paced outpatient clinic is required.  Knowledge of medication management and geriatric medications required.
    • Must be professional, proactive, collaborative, conscientious and results-oriented individual. Must have an optimistic and positive demeanor, excellent oral and written communication skills, good intuition and able to adapt to changing priorities and display good, sound judgment with a sense of humor.
    • Must be motivated to learn and flexible to change.


    • Computer literacy required, EMR required and eClinical Works is preferred. The Medical Assistant must be able to cover for the Outpatient Coordinator breaks and days off, so administrative skills are required for this role.
    • Excellent English language skills, verbal and written
    • Proficient phlebotomy skills/experience preferred
