The Development Writer will create high-quality and compelling content to advance HSL’s fundraising initiatives. This includes individual major gift proposals, fundraising priority summaries, custom letters and correspondence, high-level appeal letters, stewardship reports, speeches, and other materials. This position requires close collaboration with colleagues in Development and throughout the organization. The Development Writer will support front-line fundraisers in achieving their goals.


The Development Writer must develop a deep knowledge of HSL’s mission, organizational goals, strategic plan, fundraising strategy, and overall products and services, and apply that knowledge creatively in developing written Development materials.



• Work closely with the President and CEO, Chief Development Officer/VP for Development and Board Relations, and the major gifts team to write gift proposals, letters, and other communications that are tailored to the individual needs, interests, and personalities of major donors
• Work with staff across HSL to research and create boiler-plate descriptions of key fundraising priorities, including budgets and naming opportunities
• Produce written materials about focus areas and funding needs for HSL’s Institute for Aging Research
• Support and/or participate in the development of communications tools for HSL’s upcoming philanthropic campaign, either in-house or with campaign communications consultants
• Align written communications with campaign priorities and messaging
• Contribute to other written communications that may include but not be limited to foundation proposals and reports, stewardship reports, acknowledgement letter templates, custom appeal letters, newsletter articles, and/or collateral materials
• Work with the President and CEO, Chief Development Officer, and other senior staff on remarks for donor events
• Project manage writing assignments from start to finish
• Work in conjunction with the Development writing team to develop processes for effectively working with development and program colleagues and to address department needs for writing support
• Occasional proofing of letters, documents, collateral, and other materials
• With the support of the Development Communications Manager, prioritize writing assignments and keep in close communication with Development team members about their writing needs and deliverables


• Proven fluency and expertise in using the English language in oral and written communications
• Bachelor’s degree
• Four to six years of experience in proposal development, development communications, and/or fundraising, preferably in a health care setting
• Non-profit experience required
• Experience fundraising in a capital campaign environment preferred
• Superior writing and editing skills. Writing samples will be requested and a writing test may be administered to final candidates.
• Ability to translate complex concepts, including clinical research and health care business strategies, into clear, approachable, donor-friendly language
• Sound judgment, thoughtfulness, attention to detail; the ability to think strategically; and a strong work ethic
• Must be able to adhere to deadlines, recognize potential issues and obstacles, and identify solutions to successfully accomplish agreed-upon goals
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently within a team structure
• Tact and sensitivity in dealing with confidential donor information
• Commitment to demonstrating HSL’s Cultural Beliefs
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required
