Overview

The Development Communications Specialist will produce high-quality and compelling publications and content to advance the mission of Hebrew SeniorLife. This position will support Hebrew SeniorLife’s Development and Communications functions, collaborating with colleagues in both departments and across the organization. This includes managing publication and collateral production, video and photo content, written communications, digital outreach, and associated vendors.

The Development Communications Specialist must develop a deep knowledge of HSL’s mission, organizational goals, strategic plan, fundraising strategy, and overall products and services, and apply that knowledge creatively in developing communications that build brand awareness and reputation for HSL and its services and advance philanthropy.

Responsibilities

 

  • Serve as project manager for Hebrew SeniorLife’s annual report, including management of concept, writing, design, photography, print production, and mailing, and budget.
    • Set a production timeline and help the internal team (Development Communications Manager, Communications Director, and Development Writer) keep to the established schedule
    • Collaborate with Development Operations and Fiscal for donor listings and financials
    • Work with design, photo, and print vendors
    • Schedule and supervise photo shoots
    • Manage internal approvals
  • Execute email communication and fundraising programs for donors and fundraising appeals, including Inside HSL for leadership donors and key prospects, along with other potential new vehicles.
    • With the Development Communications Manager, develop strategies and a calendar for ongoing e-mail outreach to donors
    • Write content
    • Become an expert at using the CRM product to build and send e-mails
    • Collaborate with Development staff on lists and segmentation
    • Contribute strategies to grow HSL’s email lists
  • Work with the major gifts team to write personalized gift proposals for individual donors
  • Work in conjunction with the Development writing team to address department needs for writing support
    • Write and edit donor communications, including letters, articles, and reports
    • Share content as appropriate
    • Proofread letters, documents, collateral, and other materials
  • Write content for Hebrew SeniorLife’s blog
  • Manage production of corporate and development collateral materials. Manage vendors and write content as necessary.
  • Organize and supervise photo and video shoots, including recruiting participants and securing locations.
  • Use the corporate communications photo library to identify photos to support print and digital content
  • Update organizational documents including Hebrew SeniorLife and Hebrew Rehabilitation Center fact sheets and By-the-Numbers
  • Write and manage production of tribute book ads and directory listings, including basic design work as necessary
  • Conduct research, including online and with internal sources, to support content development

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or communications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years of experience in communications, public relations, and/or content creation
  • Non-profit experience required
  • Experience in health care preferred
  • Experience in fundraising preferred
  • Proven fluency and expertise in using the English language in oral and written communications
  • Superior writing and editing skills. Writing samples will be requested and a writing test may be administered to final candidates.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts, including clinical research and health care business strategies, into clear, approachable language
  • Sound judgment, thoughtfulness, attention to detail; the ability to think strategically; and a strong work ethic
  • Must be able to adhere to deadlines, recognize potential issues and obstacles, and identify solutions to successfully accomplish agreed-upon goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently within a team structure
  • Tact and sensitivity in dealing with confidential donor information
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and Adobe Photoshop and InDesign required
  • Experience working with a CRM product; Blackbaud’s Luminate preferred.
  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS a plus.
