Overview

HSL has begun planning for its next fund raising campaign, with a working, internal goal of  $150-$200 million.  This will allow HSL to achieve its strategic priorities such as a Center of Excellence for Aging Brain Health and Alzheimer’s Disease, a Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, an Institute for Education, and modernizing care to seniors in our Roslindale facility.  This Campaign will help ensure HSL’s financial strength and stability while elevating our position for the future.

 

The Planned Giving Officer will play a critical role in the overall success of our Major Gifts and Annual Giving Teams.  S/he will work closely with and report to the Director of Development to develop and implement strategy for individual gift prospects and donors to meet short and long-term goals of the department. The primary objective of the Planned Giving Officer is to develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions and values. The Planned Giving Officer will demonstrate a passion for the HSL mission and for seniors; identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors for gifts of $25,000+; and must possess the ability to be creative, flexible and think out of the box. 

Responsibilities

  • Develops and oversees the implementation of a comprehensive, departmental program to market planned gifts including bequests, entrance fee gifts, annuities, trust and gifts of real estate including direct mail, email and websites, moving the current program forward and furthering best practices
  • Works with the Director of Development to provide educational training and technical support to donors and staff on the benefits and implications of planned giving instruments
  • Builds and actively manages a portfolio of approximately 75 - 100 of planned giving donors and major gift prospects through all stages of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Prepares planned gift proposals and participates in joint calls/visits with major gift officers on the team
  • Strives to meet individual and team metrics for personal visits and fund raising outcomes
  • Participates in departmental projects such as prospecting, stewardship and event planning as needed
  • Travel to our eight housing communities located throughout the Boston area for events, prospect meetings and internal networking

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of non-profit planned giving fundraising experience, a strong record of closing 5-figure planned gifts and a thorough understanding of financial and estate planning and deferred giving
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to and inspire the trust and confidence of donors, their legal and financial advisors as well as the trust and confidence of colleagues
  • Eagerness to embody HSL cultural beliefs and belief in HSL’s mission
  • Strong sense of responsibility for achieving personal fundraising goals while working as a member of a team
  • Capacity to manage and organize confidential information and to exercise discretion and sound judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively; synthesize information and communicate it in an accurate and compelling form, both written and spoken; and multi-task, meet deadlines, and work as a self-starter
  • Experience with Development information systems and databases (PG Calc, Raisers’ Edge)
  • Bachelor’s degree required
