Overview

The Medical Director will oversee all of the medical care provided on the 26 bed Medical Acute Care Unit. (LTACH) S/he will ensure the medical staff has the support needed to provide the best quality of care to the patients on the unit.  This role does involve clinical and administrative responsibilities.  

Responsibilities

Physician Leadership

  • Ensures that MACU patients have appropriate physician coverage and ensure the provision of physician and health care practitioner services; and
  • Provide specific guidance for physician performance expectations;
  • Monitoring the performance of health care practitioners on the unit;
  • Facilitate feedback to physicians and other health care practitioners on performance and practices.
  • Monthly scheduling of Providers

Patient Care - Clinical Leadership

  • Participate in administrative decision-making and the development of policies and procedures related to MACU  patient care;
  • Review patient admissions that are of clinical concern
  • Help develop, approve, and implement specific clinical practices for the MACU to incorporate into its care-related policies and procedures, including areas required by laws and regulations;
  • Develop procedures and guidance for facility staff regarding contacting practitioners, including information gathering and presentation, change in condition assessment, and when to contact the medical director;
  • Review, consider and/or act upon consultant recommendations, as appropriate, that affect the facility's resident care policies and procedures or the care of an individual resident
  • Review, respond to and participate in federal, state, local and other external surveys and inspections; and
  • Help review policies and procedures regarding the adequate protection of patients' rights, advance care planning, and other ethical issues.
  • Work with nursing leadership, therapy staff, social workers and case management to support the implementation of an interdisciplinary team

  • Weekly MACU URC meeting on Fridays
  • Code Blue Team Meeting
  • MACU URC Meeting
  • MACU Quality Assurance Meeting
  • Clinical Informatics Committee Membership(adhoc)

 Quality of Care

  • Help the MACU team establish systems and methods for reviewing the quality and appropriateness of clinical care and other health-related services and provide appropriate feedback; and
  • Participate in the MACU's quality improvement process;
  • Engage with infection control team on issues and approve specific infection control policies to be incorporated into facility policies and procedures;

Education, Information, and Communication

  • Promote a learning culture within the facility by educating, informing, and communicating;
  • Provide information to help the facility provide care consistent with current standards of practice (defined as "approaches to care, procedures, techniques and treatments that are based on research and /or expert consensus and that are contained in current manuals textbooks and or publications, or that are accepted, adopted or promulgated by recognized organizations or national bodies.")
  • Represent the facility to the professional and lay community on medical and patient care issues if the need arises

Qualifications

  • Board certification in Internal Medicine
  • Prior medical supervisory experience preferred
  • Valid and unrestricted Massachusetts Medical License and Federal DEA certification
  • Valid and unrestricted Massachusetts driver’s license as this position requires travel between sites
  • ACLS certified.
  • Must pass a pre-employment health screening examination and CORI background check
  • Meets all requirements in order to obtain medical staff membership and required privileges
  • Meets requirements for academic appointment to Harvard Medical School at rank commensurate with accomplishments and experience
